AEI 2011 Student Officers
Student Vision 2011

Josh Wentz
President, Pennsylvania State University
In being the only national organization that unites architectural engineers of all options, AEI has great potential in connecting both students and leaders alike in the building industry. The other national student officers, Bryant Denning (Vice President) and Ece Koch (Secretary), and myself have two goals in creating a closer AE community on a national level: transparency and communication.
Transparency. We strive to create a more visible and lucid organization with discrete benefits to active student involvement. Compared to the hundreds of AE students nation-wide, very few are actively involved in AEI on a national level beyond the annual competition. Through refining the purpose of the organization from a student’s perspective while defining the benefits of getting involved, the current officers and myself hope to increase membership in local student chapters as well as the annual student networking event. In specific, we hope to give students a voice within the Board of Governors and AE curriculum discussions.
Communication. Through leveraging new online technologies, we hope to give students clear connections to industry and each other. Currently, there is little to no communication among the local chapters of AEI. Through creating and maintaining a local Presidents Council list-serv, we hope to increase AEI event & competition awareness while sparking ideas & networking opportunities among chapters. In addition, we plan to implement an AEI student portal, geared towards student resources available through AEI and a real-time view into what national AEI officers are discussing and developing.

The Joseph B. Olivieri Scholarship
Lawrence Technological University
Michael Paciero, junior in Architectural Engineering at Lawrence Technological University wins 2011 Joseph B. Olivieri Scholarship.
Southfield, MI - In his essay entitled “Creating a Sustainable Built Environment”, Mike Paciero exposes his aspirations and ambitions as he wins this year’s Joseph B. Olivieri Scholarship from the Detroit Chapter of ASHRAE. “Every day, I strive to incorporate sustainable and healthy living into my life,” Mike begins. He describes his daily routine of physical running and constant mental exertion as key elements in his quest to focus on a sustainable world. From going out of his way to turn off lights during the day, to unplugging phone chargers to reduce ‘plug loads’, Mike takes an active part in Lawrence Tech’s recycling campaign, and sets an example of constant, conscious and sustained efforts to practice sustainability.
