Message from the AEI President
Raphael A. (Ray) Yunk, P.E
 rayyunk

Hello all and Happy Holidays!  I wanted to take this opportunity to introduce myself as the new President of the Architectural Engineering Institute (AEI) and bring some of the Institute’s activities and initiatives to your attention.  In this position, I am very pleased to be working closely with Jennifer Balsley, P.E., the Manager of AEI, and Verna Jameson, the Administrator of AEI.

As an institute of ASCE AEI’s mission is to provide a multi-disciplinary forum for building industry professionals engaged in the planning, design, construction, and operation of buildings to examine technical and professional issues of common interest.  One of the biggest challenges for AEI (and architectural engineering in general) is identity.  Many of us have spent most of our careers explaining that, no, we are not architects, but yes, we work on building projects.  During the formation of AEI in 1997, Stan Caldwell, used the following definition of architectural engineering:

Simply stated, an Architectural Engineer is an engineer who pursues a career in the planning, design, construction, and/or operation of buildings.  He/she views a building as an integrated system of structural, mechanical, electrical, and architectural elements.  Most Architectural Engineers are specialized in only one of these fields.  However, it is their perspective that building projects require well-coordinated, multi-disciplinary teamwork that sets them apart from others.”

AEI Nebraska Has Eventful 2011 and Looking Forward to a Great 2012

Omaha, NE - The AEI Nebraska Chapter has had a very eventful year in 2011.  Early in the year, we had several members attend the national AEI Conference held in Oakland, CA with several members involved in national committees including the student design competition committee and the membership committee.  We joined our local ASCE Chapter for participation in a Habitat for Humanity Build and we also got our official MOU signed with them as well.  This fall, we hosted a chapter meeting with a speaker from the Nebraska Board of Engineers and Architects and we also enjoyed a case study given by Rodrigo Manriquez (Lighting Design Studio Leader – Smith Group – Detroit) on The National Intrepid Center of Excellence located at the Walter Reed National Medical Center.  It was a very exciting year for AEI Nebraska and now we are in full swing planning for the 2012 year.

The New Year is already looking to be a busy and full-filled year for our AEI Nebraska Chapter.  We are hosting a chapter meeting in January and are very busy planning for the first ever AEI/ASHRAE Expo on March 7th.  We have joined forces with our local ASHRAE Chapter to host a one day technical conference and Expo in Omaha.  It is shaping up to be a great event.  For more information please visit our web-site at www.aei-ashraexpo.org or email us at info@aei-ashraexpo.org and plan to join us if you can. There may even be a few speaker spots still available if interested.  In April, we are hosting a Building Security Workshop in conjunction with the AEI National Student Conference that is being held in Omaha.  The workshop will be held the morning of Thursday April 19th with the student conference continuing through Saturday the 21st.  We are very excited for all of our planned upcoming events and looking forward to hosting more events in the near future.

Thanks to everyone who has given so much support as we have gotten our chapter up and running.  Merry Christmas and have a Happy New Year!

'Sustainability in Action'
New Web feature showcases sustainable infrastructure projects
 SustainabilityProjectsCollage

From award-winning projects like the Orange County, CA, Groundwater Replenishment System to smaller scale projects like the Marysville, WA, park-and-ride lot, civil engineers are applying principles of sustainability to deliver “triple bottom line” benefits to the public. ASCE's Web site features a new library of project profiles that demonstrate how sustainable infrastructure contributes economic, environmental and social benefits. Featured profiles span all sectors and include projects ranging from under $1 million to more than $1 billion. The expanding library will help civil engineers research solutions, share data and information with clients, and find sources for further research. The site also allows users to rate and comment on profiles, and encourages submission of additional profiles via an easy-to-use online form.

SMT 2012 Conference: NDT/NDE for Highways and Bridges:
Structural Materials Technology (SMT)

Call For Papers - deadline is February 3, 2012

ASNT, ASCE (SEI, AEI and EMI), and NYSDOT, among others, are co-sponsoring "SMT 2012 Conference: NDT/NDE for Highways and Bridges: Structural Materials Technology" and invite abstracts for presentation at the conference. This conference will be held in the New York LaGuardia Airport Marriott near New York City, NY on August 21-24, 2012. The goal of this conference is to promote the exchange of information between national and international researchers, practitioners and infrastructure owners on the application of Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE) and Nondestructive Testing (NDT) technologies for the condition assessment of highway infrastructure. Contributions focused on field applications, case studies, technology implementation, applied research, and practical experience are invited. Through technical presentations and exhibits, infrastructure owners, transportation officials, researchers, consultants, and contractors will be exposed to the state-of-the-practice in nondestructive evaluation (NDE) methods. In addition, participants will have the opportunities to discuss urgent problems faced by civil infrastructure owners and the potential solutions utilizing available emerging NDE technologies.

Plans are also underway to host a workshop “Use of Remote Sensing for Infrastructure Management” as part of the conference activities on August 24th .

More information on the conference, abstract submission instructions, and exhibitor information, please visit the Conference Website at http://www.asnt.org/events/conferences/smt12/smt12.htm
