The James Marston Fitch Charitable
Foundation 2009 Grant
Awards
The
James Marston Fitch Charitable Foundation announces our latest
Mid-Career Grant Awards.
New York, June 16, 2010– John H. Stubbs,
Chair of the James Marston Fitch Charitable Foundation, announced on
behalf of the Foundation’s trustees the latest Fitch Mid-Career
Grant Awards. “The Foundation had its largest number of
applicants this year, and despite a difficult economy, the Board is
delighted to award two Fitch Foundation Mid-Career Grants to three
very worthy recipients,” stated Stubbs.
With the
support of a Fitch Foundation Mid-Career grant, Ned Kauffman will be
traveling to Dublin, Ireland for ICOMOS meetings on international
practices of conserving intangible heritage. Ned Kaufman will
lead working groups at the conference and plans to gather
information on best practices in this relatively new facet of
heritage protection from around the world. Attending the conference
will be a wonderful opportunity to inject U.S. perspectives and
experience into the international discussion. His ultimate goal is
to develop a ‘best practices’ model and guide for United States
practitioners. The Board noted that for the future of historic
preservation in the United States, Kaufman’s work on connecting the
significance of intangible heritage practices to the built
environment was essential and prescient.
Laura Ewen Blokker and Heather A. Knight’s
joint proposal, Louisiana’s
Bousillage Tradition: Investigation of Past Techniques for Future
Practice, addresses the
Colonial building technique of bousillage, (wood frame construction with naturally
dried tempered clay infill), which was used in Creole and Arcadian
Louisiana during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Based on
the European tradition but adapted to the New World climate,
bousillage
is a multi-cultural
building tradition that has remarkably scant published
documentation. Blokker and Knight propose to produce a report that
will combine materials analysis with oral history, field studies,
trials and mock-ups. They plan to present their findings at
conferences next year and aim to eventually publish a full primer as
a sequel publication. The Board was impressed by their dedication to
documenting a formerly important traditional building method that is
slowly disappearing.

Cash Prizes for Young
Researchers
Young researchers in any civil engineering discipline
are eligible for the 2011 Walter L. Huber Civil
Engineering Research Prizes. The Huber Prize recognizes
members of the Society in any grade for notable achievements in
research related to civil engineering. Preference is given to
younger members (generally under 40 years of age) of early
accomplishment who can be expected to continue fruitful careers in
research. Past Huber winners view this prize as an important
milestone in their career. Nominations are due October 1, 2010.
Recognize Winning Papers
ASCE is currently accepting
nominations for the following 2011 awards recognizing excellence in
published papers. To be eligible for these awards, papers must have
been published between May 2009 and June 2010.
Norman Medal
– recognizes a paper that makes a
definitive contribution to engineering science.
J. James R.
Croes Medal – there is no direct nomination path for this award.
The Croes Medal is awarded to the paper considered second in merit to the
Norman Medal winner.
Arthur M.
Wellington Award – recognizes a paper on transportation on land, on the
water, in the air or on foundations and closely related
subjects.
ASCE State of the Art of Civil Engineering
Award -
recognizes the individual,
individuals or committee that has prepared, for the benefit of the
profession, the most outstanding paper which reviews and interprets

Technology
The Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) has started
a search for a new department chair of Civil, Architectural and
Environmental Engineering (CAEE). Ideal candidates will
help lead the department to the next level of research and
scholarship without compromising the Institute's reputation for
outstanding education of practicing engineers. Candidates for the position are
expected to merit appointment as a full professor and have a record of
distinguished research and educational
achievements.
CAEE has ABET accredited undergraduate programs in
both Civil and Architectural Engineering, Masters programs in Architectural Engineering, Structural Engineering,
Geotechnical Engineering, Construction and Engineering Management,
Transportation Engineering, Public Works, and a PhD program in Civil
Engineering. The department has 232 undergraduate and 240 graduate
students.
The department currently has 13 tenure/tenure track
faculty and 2 senior lecturers with one other current faculty search
ongoing. IIT has undergone a massive administration change over the
past three years with President, Provost, and Dean of
Engineering. The new administration is promising highly competitive
compensation and
benefits.
IIT is located in the heart Chicago, just
minutes from downtown. In addition to being in one of the world centers of the
A/E/C industry, IIT boasts a very strong College of
Architecture
and collaboration between CAEE and Architecture is being encouraged by
the entire administration. Learn
